Laundry Care in the Summer

Laundry care in the summer can be a challenge. Getting rid of unpleasant odors, like sweat, from your clothes can be a hassle. Sometimes, simply washing your clothes in the washing machine isn’t enough. What can help? Tips and tricks from Schulthess.

It’s hot, it’s sweaty. On muggy summer days, there’s nothing better than stepping into a refreshing shower and then slipping into clean, fresh laundry that smells like summer. But how do you get rid of sweat odors when doing laundry?

Washing properly helps prevent bad odors

Here’s how to get your laundry really fresh and clean in the washing machine:

    • Wash sweaty clothes as soon as possible and don’t leave them lying around. Otherwise, odors will set in and bacteria can multiply.
    • It all comes down to the right amount! Using more detergent doesn’t make it any more effective against bad odors. Too much detergent leaves unsightly and scratchy residues in the clothes, but too little detergent doesn’t remove dirt and sweat effectively. When dosing, therefore, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and take the water hardness into account.
    • Use a hygienic fabric softener. Special fabric softeners are particularly effective against bad odors in smelly sportswear or towels. An even simpler solution is to add a splash of vinegar to the fabric softener compartment of the washing machine. Don’t worry—the vinegar smell will dissipate.
    • Adjust the wash temperature and wash heavily sweated items at the highest possible temperature. Many germs and odors only disappear at higher temperatures. However, be sure to follow the care label instructions.
    • Wash functional clothing separately. Sportswear made of synthetic fabrics is particularly prone to odors. So separate your sportswear and wash it with a special detergent (such as speedUp from Schulthess).

Power detergent with an extremely low dosage

One reason why laundry doesn’t get properly clean is using the wrong amount of detergent. That’s why it’s essential to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and take water hardness into account. Because when it comes to the environment, less is more, Schulthess has developed its own premium line of detergents: Flow. This detergent is highly concentrated. This means that a minimal dose of just 25 milliliters is enough for a full load of laundry. By comparison: Normally, you need 50 to 75 milliliters of detergent for a wash cycle to ensure the laundry comes out truly clean. The Schulthess innovators have done a great job here and developed a formula that washes hygienically clean with much less detergent.

Schulthess Flow laundry detergent is available in three varieties: Flow delicateFabric for delicate and fine fabrics, Flow splendidColor for vibrant colors, and Flow speedUp for sportswear. Brand new to the range is the laundry spray Flow lovelySplash – for an extra burst of freshness in your closet and suitcase.

Many germs and odors are only eliminated at higher temperatures.

Drying your laundry properly makes a difference too

There are a few things to keep in mind when drying your laundry to ensure it stays fresh-smelling for a long time.

  • How to dry laundry quickly: Don’t leave wet laundry in the washing machine or the laundry room; instead, put it in the dryer or hang it up immediately. Damp or wet laundry that is crumpled up starts to smell musty after just a short time.
  • Drying outdoors: Sun and fresh air ensure your clothes smell fresh. Only people with allergies need to be careful, because laundry that dries outdoors comes into contact with pollen.
  • Ventilation: Dry freshly washed laundry only in well-ventilated rooms. If the damp basement smells musty, the laundry drying there will smell musty too.

Essential Oil for a Personalized Scent

You can find special laundry detergents, scented beads, or scented sheets on the market that promise a long-lasting scent. However, these are generally not necessary for fresh laundry.

Instead of fabric softener, a few drops of essential oil will do the trick. To do this, add 10 to 20 drops of oil (such as lavender, lemon, eucalyptus, or peppermint) to the fabric softener compartment along with a little vinegar (approx. 50 ml). Thanks to the vinegar, this mixture also acts as a limescale remover.

Laundry Spray for an Instant Freshness Boost

You don’t have to wash your laundry every time it stops smelling fresh. Letting it air out on the balcony overnight is often enough. If you’d like, you can make your own laundry spray. Here’s how:

  • 200 ml distilled water
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 15 to 20 drops of essential oil (such as orange, tea tree, or geranium)

Place all ingredients in a spray bottle, shake well, and lightly spray onto laundry.

lovelySplash laundry spray: minimalist and alluring

If you prefer something simple and elegant, use a ready-to-use laundry spray in your closet, such as lovelySplash by Schulthess. It fills drawers and closets with a unique fragrance—and if you take it with you when traveling, you’ll enjoy a pleasant scent in your suitcase. The Schulthess laundry spray lovelySplash is the latest addition to the premium laundry detergent line Flow. The scent is delicate, pure, and unmistakable. It envelops the senses and smells like freshly washed laundry in the sunlight.

Germs Alert in the Washing Machine

Washing machines are often a breeding ground for germs, viruses, and bacteria. That’s because these machines are frequently teeming with germs: Limescale, dirt, detergent residue, sticky rubber seals, mold. No wonder the laundry doesn’t get properly clean or comes out of the machine smelling musty. Wiping down the washing machine with a clean cloth after every load and cleaning the detergent drawer helps. But what’s really needed for a hygienically clean washing machine is a professional cleaning service.

Schulthess-cleanService for all brands

That’s exactly what the Schulthess cleanService is for. Schulthess service technicians perform professional machine maintenance and care. This involves removing limescale, detergent residue, and dirt—everywhere, even in places you can’t see. The service technician checks the electronics, all seals, pumps, and programs, and makes adjustments as needed. The result: a washing machine that delivers top-notch results and hygienically clean laundry that smells just as fresh.
