Natural fibres are popular materials in the textile industry. Cotton, linen and wool are three widely used natural fibres, each with different properties. Cotton is obtained from the seed hairs of the cotton plant; it is easy to dye and highly versatile. Linen, made from flax plants, is characterised by its lustre and durability. Wool, an animal fibre from animals such as sheep and camels, is water-repellent and insulating. Caring for these materials requires specific instructions, including washing and drying guidelines, to maintain their quality.

Cotton

This well-known and popular natural fiber is obtained from the seed hairs of the cotton plant (a type of mallow). The naturally white fibers are excellent for dyeing and processing. This is precisely why cotton remains one of the most commonly used fibers. Cotton is very durable, tear-resistant, and extremely skin-friendly—a fiber for every occasion.

  • Washing: Follow the care symbols; wash white laundry with a heavy-duty detergent, colored laundry with a color-safe detergent.
  • Tumble drying: Follow the care symbols
  • Tip for cotton: If you want to save energy, wash 95°C laundry on the energy-saving cycle. You’ll save about 30% energy and can even add light-colored 60°C laundry to the load. Pre-washing is only necessary for extremely soiled items.

Linen

This material is one of the oldest types of textile fibers. It is made from the stems of the flax plant. Linen is characterized by a natural sheen, is very durable, resistant to dirt and odors, and does not pill. In the home textiles sector, linen is used primarily for table linens and bedding. In the fashion industry, the cool “elegant crinkle look” is particularly popular in the summer.

  • Washing: Have delicate items dry-cleaned (see manufacturer’s labels). Always turn textiles inside out. Wash white and bleached linen at 60°C; wash colored and unbleached linen on the “Easy Care” cycle at a maximum of 40°C using a color-safe detergent
  • Drying: Tumble dry on the gentle cycle until just damp enough to iron. Never dry in direct sunlight.
  • Tip: To prevent linen from wrinkling in your suitcase, simply place tissue paper between the items.

Wool

Wool is a small miracle of nature. As an animal fiber, it is water-repellent, insulates against both cold and heat, is highly elastic, and flame-resistant. We owe classic wool to sheep. But the fine hairs of camels, llamas, alpacas, cashmere and mohair goats, and Angora rabbits are also among the sources of wool.

  • Washing: Always turn wool inside out. Wash on the hand wash cycle at 30–40 °C using a special wool detergent. Never use all-purpose detergents, color-safe detergents, or fabric conditioners.
  • Drying: Spread out on a dry terry cloth towel, shape it, and let it dry flat. Never tumble dry wool. However, after drying, refresh it using the dryer’s wool care cycle—and you’ll have beautiful wool, perfectly washed and conditioned.
