Which washing program for which clothes?

Modern washing machines offer many special programs that cover all needs. Using them pays off: you save water, electricity, detergent, and time, and your textiles are protected.

Many people simply wash everything at 40 °C. That works in many cases, but you could save a lot more time and energy if you used the programs correctly. They are tailored to different textiles and to your needs.

Why the right program matters

Manufacturers put a lot of thought into how to wash gently, quickly, and efficiently. Machines like the Schulthess Home Heroes are true all-rounders: fast, clean, energy-saving, and gentle on fabrics, provided you let them do their job.

Modern washing machines, such as the Home Heroes from Schulthess, offer a wide variety of programs that are gentle on fabrics and make your life easier.

Reminder: care symbols

Check the care label first. Here is what the main symbols mean: the tub stands for washing, the triangle for bleaching, the square for drying, the iron for ironing, and the circle for dry cleaning.

  • The tub stands for washing
  • The triangle stands for bleaching
  • The square stands for drying
  • The iron stands for ironing
  • The circle stands for dry cleaning

Wash symbols: washing

The most important symbol is the tub. It covers the entire washing process, whether in the machine or by hand. If the tub appears with a hand, it means hand wash. The temperature must not exceed 40 °C.

The tub can also show numbers. These indicate the maximum washing temperature.

If there is one line under the tub, the item should be washed gently with reduced spin. An easy care program is recommended and the drum should be filled no more than half. Two lines mean the fabric is very delicate. Use a special delicates or wool program and avoid spinning. Fill the drum no more than one third.

If the tub is crossed out, the garment must not be washed.

Programs at a glance

Modern washing machines such as the Home Heroes from Schulthess offer a wide range of different programs that are gentle on fabrics and make life easier.

3D-Powerclean: Spotlessly clean laundry in under an hour for normally soiled loads.

Homecare:Intensive cleaning for home textiles such as bed linen, terry towels, down, or curtains.

Businesswear: Gentle treatment for blouses, shirts, and suit trousers, a program that saves a trip to the dry cleaner.

Sportswear: Washing and re-proofing outdoor sports clothing, for ski suits, jackets, technical wear, and even trainers.

babyCare: Special program for demanding baby and children’s laundry, with intensive rinsing for sensitive skin. It even washes plastic building blocks.

Softcare: For delicate natural fibres such as angora, cashmere, or silk.

Express: The ultra-quick program for lightly soiled laundry.

Quickwash: Super-fast program for first wash of new textiles or rinsing swimwear.

Antibac: For allergy sufferers, tackles mites, pollen, bacteria, and fungi.

easyFinish: Shirts and blouses come out crease-free without an iron, thanks to gentle cooling and multi-directional stretching in the drum.

Choosing the right temperature

Thanks to modern machines and powerful detergents, plus stain pre-treatment, you can wash effectively at lower temperatures:

30°C:

  • delicate fabrics such as silk, viscose, wool, and lightly soiled everyday items

40°C:

  • standard for most garments, removes sweat and normal soiling

60°C:

  • towels, bed linen, underwear, cotton, for heavier soiling or higher hygiene needs, recommended for allergy sufferers and vulnerable people

90°C:

  • cleaning cloths and, in case of illness, kitchen or bed linen. An occasional 90 °C cycle helps keep the machine hygienic..
